AI & Cyber Advisory
Does My Small Business Need an AI or Cybersecurity Plan?
Executive Summary
You do not need an IT department to make good technology decisions. Key questions every owner should be able to answer.
Many owners assume AI strategy and cybersecurity are only for large companies. In practice, small businesses rely on the same email, cloud software, payment systems, and customer data, often with fewer safeguards. A plan does not need to be complicated, but it should exist.
Treat technology as a business decision
The question is not "what is the latest tool?" but "what does this cost, what risk does it create or reduce, and what return do we expect?" That framing puts technology decisions alongside other investments in the business.
Questions every owner should be able to answer
- What customer, employee, and financial data do we hold, and where does it live?
- Who has access to our key accounts, and is multi-factor authentication turned on?
- If our email or accounting system were unavailable for a week, what would it cost us?
- Which AI tools are employees already using, and what information are they entering into them?
- Are we paying for software we no longer use?
Where AI fits
AI tools can save time on drafting, analysis, and customer service, but they also introduce new questions about accuracy, privacy, and vendor reliance. Starting with one or two clearly defined uses, and measuring the results, is usually wiser than adopting many tools at once.
Next step
Answering the questions above is a useful first step on its own. Medema Partners provides independent advisory on AI adoption, cyber exposure, and technology investment, with technical implementation handled by qualified third-party providers when needed.
