Is My Business Ready to Grow? Five Financial Signals to Check First
Executive Summary
Growth strains cash, people, and systems. Five signals that show whether your business is ready to expand.
Growth feels like the goal, but expanding before the business is ready can turn a profitable company into a cash-strapped one. Before adding a location, a product line, or staff, it is worth checking a few financial signals.
1. You understand your margins by product or service
If you know which offerings actually make money after direct costs, you can grow the right ones. If everything is blended into one number, growth may simply multiply your least profitable work.
2. Cash flow is predictable
Revenue on paper is not cash in the bank. Growth usually requires paying for inventory, people, or marketing before customers pay you. A business that already manages cash timing well is far better positioned to absorb that gap.
3. You have a cushion
Reserves, an available line of credit, or both give you room when expansion takes longer or costs more than planned, which it often does.
4. Your records are reliable
Clean, timely financial statements make it possible to measure whether growth is working, and they are usually required by lenders or investors if you need outside capital.
5. You have a plan with a downside case
A good growth plan states what you expect to happen and what you will do if results come in lower. If the plan only works when everything goes right, it needs more work.
